Getting a perfect fit for your press-on nails is super important—not just for comfort, but to make sure they last as long as possible and look totally seamless. Whilst sizing kits are absolutely the best way for you to size your nails for the perfect press-on fit, you’ve got two easy ways to size your nails at home without one:
- With a soft tape measure
- Using the cellotape method
Let’s break down both methods so you can find your fit in minutes!
⚡️ Method 1: Soft Tape Measure
A soft (sewing) tape measure is flexible and ideal for curving around the natural shape of your nail bed.
What you’ll need:
- A soft tape measure (the type used for sewing)
- A pen and paper (or your phones notes app)
Step-by-step:
1. Place the tape measure across the widest part of your nail, usually around the middle or just above the free edge.
2. Make sure it curves with your nail shape (don’t press it flat across!).
3. Note down the measurement in millimetres (mm).
4. Repeat for all 10 nails. (Yup, each one can be slightly different!)
💅 Pro tip: If you’re between two sizes, always size up—you can gently file a press-on to fit, but you can’t add extra!
⚡️ Method 2: Cellotape Method (No Tape Measure? No Problem!)
Don’t have a tape measure? This quick DIY trick works just as well using clear tape and a ruler.
What you’ll need:
- Clear cellotape
- A pen
- A ruler (ideally one with mm markings)
- Paper or your phone to jot sizes
Step-by-step:
1. Tear off a small piece of clear tape and place it over the widest part of your nail.
2. Use a pen to mark where the edges of your nail are—left and right.
3. Peel the tape off and stick it on a piece of paper.
4. Use your ruler to measure the distance between the two marks in mm.
5. Write it down and repeat for each nail.
💅 Pro tip: You can also number each tape piece with the finger (e.g. “L Thumb” or “R Pinky”) to keep everything clear.
